Clearing Clogged Drains With Hydro Jetting

For decades, plumbers have been clearing clogged drains using a plumbing auger, a flexible metal cable with a cutting head on the end.  The plumbing auger is fed into the clogged pipe and spun at high speed by an electric motor. The auger cuts through whatever is blocking the pipe such as tree roots, grease, paper products, and other debris.

Drain augers work great for clearing many types of clogged pipes, but they have some limitations.  In many cases, they cannot completely clear the clog.  Instead, they punch a hole in the clog which allows the pipe to drain, but the part of the clog left behind will collect debris and a new clog will eventually form.

High pressure hydro jetting is a more recently developed tool for clearing clogged drains.  Hydro jetting uses a spray nozzle and high pressure water (about 3,000 to 4,0000 psi) to cut through tough clogs and blast away the debris that accumulates on the inside of drain pipes.

Hydro jetting is effective on most types of clogs including tree roots.  Unlike a traditional drain auger, hydro jetting will remove the entire clog and flush away the debris.  The high pressure water will scour the inside of the pipe and leave it in almost like new condition.  Restaurants and other businesses often use regular hydro jetting to keep their drain lines free of grease and other clog causing material.

Regular, routine hydro jetting is probably overkill for most residential applications, but it can be a great way to clear a persistent clog and get your drain lines flowing freely again.

Hydro Jetting For Tough Clogs

If your sinks, toilets, and drain lines keep backing up and snaking the drain does not seem to fix the problem, you may need high pressure hydro-jetting.  For homes, apartments, offices and restaurants, high pressure hydro jetting is one of the most effective ways of getting rid of sludge, grease and debris trapped in your sewer and drain lines.

Whether it’s in the kitchen or your sewer line, drains become clogged over time. Debris settles in, creating sludge which is hard to remove. If tree roots have infiltrated your drain lines or sewer lines, sludge and other debris will collect on the roots and form a clog.

An electric cable machine or a drain snake can provide temporary relief by punching through the clog, but chances the problem hasn’t been fixed. The clog will begin re-forming almost immediately and the drain will need to be cleared again.  High pressure hydro jetting will the entire clog and the debris and it will be much less likely that the clog will re-form

Hydro jetting uses highly pressurized water sprayed through special nozzles to blast through the clog and wash away the clog and debris.  Hydro jetting also cuts through and removes most tree roots.  The high pressure water scours the inside of the sewer line or drain pipe and removes grease, sludge, and other debris.  The inside of the pipe is left clean and clear of foreign material.  When used by an experienced plumbing professional, hydro-jetting is a safe, effective way to clear tough clogs.

Rootering vs. Hydro-Jetting

Clogged drains have been around since shortly after the invention of closed plumbing systems and techniques for clearing clogged drains have developed ever since.  One of the most common methods for clearing clogged drains these days is rootering.

Rootering is done by inserting a flexible spring-like metal cable into the drain pipe and spinning it rapidly.  As it spins, cutting heads attached to the leading end of the metal cable scrape the inside of the pipe knocking looses any debris.  The cutting head can also cut through most clogs including paper, tree roots, sludge, grease, and the like.

Rootering is effective for clearing clogs, but it tends to leave some debris behind.  In particular, some grease and sludge is usually left behind on the pipe walls.  Also, although rootering can cut through tree roots and allow the drain to flow, it leaves part of the tree roots inside the pipe.  The grease, sludge, and tree roots left behind will usually start collecting new gunk that will form another clog in the future.

High pressure hydro-jetting is much more effective at removing all of the foreign material from inside the drain pipe.  Hydro-jetting uses high pressure hoses that are dragged or pushed through the drain line.  Nozzles at the end of the hose spray the inside of the pipe with water at three to four thousand psi.  This high pressure water thoroughly removes grease, sludge, and other foreign material from the inside of the pipe.  It also cuts through and washes away all of the tree roots that were intruding into the pipe.

With both rootering and hydro-jetting, if your clog was caused by tree roots, you will need to address the issue or the clog will return as soon as the tree roots grow back.
