Design trends come and go, even for elemental fixtures like the kitchen sink. If you are bored with your old stainless sink, maybe it is time for a makeover. • Apron sinks. One of the hottest comebacks in kitchen sinks is the classic apron sinks. These resemble the farmhouse-style sink from years gone by, often made of porcelain or copper with a deep basin. These can be freestanding or incorporated with installed under a counter and offer a large sink with easy cleanup.
  • Marble or quartz integrated sinks. Instead of adding a sink to your countertop, many new stone countertops come with integrated sinks. Marble and quartz countertops can be designed with a sink, making a seamless transition for a flawless surface without interruption.
  • Prep sinks. Are you looking for function over fashion? Adding a prep sink to your kitchen can make cooking those gourmet meals a breeze. These utility sinks come in a variety of shapes and sizes and make it convenient for cooking and cleanup. Often these sinks are installed on kitchen islands for easy prep work or next to stoves for easy filling of your stockpots.

Causes of Rusty Water

Have you noticed a change in your water? Even if your water looks clear, if you have started to notice brown or orange stains on your sinks and tub or dingy clothing, you may have rust in your water. Although many people with well water fight with rust issues, if this is a new problem, it may be coming from inside your home. To find the cause or source of the issue, you may need to investigate your plumbing fixtures.

If the rust is not coming from your water source, it is being added somewhere along the way. This is usually from one of two places: your water heater or your plumbing pipes. There are a few ways to determine which is the cause. The easiest is to start with your water heater.

Most water heaters last between 10-15 years, sometimes more. It is common for lime and minerals to collect within the tank, which can cause rust. To stop this corrosion, it is recommended that water heaters undergo annual maintenance to flush out these collected minerals. Draining the tank and having your water heater inspected by a professional plumber is the easiest way to determine whether your rusty water is being caused by your water heater.

If the water heater is not to blame, most likely you have an old pipe that is rusting, emitting rust into your water supply. Your local plumber can help you find any pipes that may need to be replaced to remedy the issue.

Water filtration and softeners can reduce rust in your water, but they won’t fix the problem if the rust is coming from inside your home. Schedule an appointment with your trusted plumber to get the rust problem resolved for good.

Is Your Toilet Wasting Water and Money?

Did you know that for most homes, more water is used through the toilet than any other appliance or fixture? Even showers and your washing machine may use less water than your toilet. It is estimated that a third of all water used in most homes is flushed down the toilet. When a toilet leaks or is an older, less efficient model, the amount of waste can be even more. Replacing your toilet can be the most effective way to reduce water usage in your home, saving a vital natural resource while also reducing your water and energy costs.

So what makes newer toilets more efficient? It all comes down to the design.  Larger flapper valves, redesigned trap ways and longer flush valves in new efficient toilets have improve the function of these fixtures while decreasing water use. With these new improvements, many of the newer efficient toilets can garner a large savings in water use, up to 20% in many cases. This savings can be reflected on your water bill and ensure you are doing your part in helping reduce water waste.

Don’t continue flushing water and money down the toilet with an old, inefficient model. Upgrade to a new toilet that will help reduce your water use while offering higher functionality for your home. Although replacing a toilet is a quick plumbing service, it does require expertise to ensure it is installed correctly. An improperly installed toilet can lead to even bigger problem such as water damage to your flooring if it is not sealed correctly. Contact your local plumbing company to discuss which of the newer options will work best for your needs and schedule a professional installation.

Be sure that your new toilet is installed correctly and properly sealed so that it will last for many years to come.

Is Your Home Being Damaged by a Leaky Pipe?

Have you been putting off the repair of a leaking pipe in your plumbing? A slow drip under your bathroom sink or condensation collecting on your toilet may not seem like a big issue, but eventually it will become a problem. While a putting drip pan under the sink or wiping down your toilet every day is just a slight nuisance, if left unchecked, you may end up with a plumbing emergency or damage to your home.

In most cases, fixing a leaky pipe is quick and inexpensive. Often you just need some new joint sealer or a washer needs replacement. However, the costs can go through the roof if that small leak or drip turns into a broken or burst pipe. Quickly a drip can turn into a flood of water entering your home. If this happens when you are at work or on vacation, you could come back to serious damage to your home. Some of the issues caused by an unexpected burst pipe include:

  • Water damage to floors and ceilings
  • Mold intrusion inside walls, under flooring and throughout the home
  • Expensive water damage repair and mold removal costs

As they say, hindsight is 20/20. Don’t let a small leak turn into a problem by putting off the needed repair. A quick call to your local plumber can get the issue resolved with very little expense and put your mind at ease. Plumbing problems never go away on their own and will only get worse. It is worth the small investment now to have the leak problem repaired before it causes hundreds, even thousands of dollars of damage to your home.
