What to Do if You Have a Frozen Water Pipe

Every year, when the coldest days of winter hit, there are thousands of people who end up with frozen water pipes. Some of the worst problems happen in areas where cold weather neither common nor expected, leaving many pipes exposed to the elements without any insulation. If you turn on your water after a very cold night and find very little to no water coming out of the faucet, there’s a good chance you have a frozen pipe.

Finding and Thawing a Frozen Water Pipe

One of the toughest issues with a frozen water pipe is determining which pipe has been affected. The first step is attempting to turn on the water in different areas of your house. If all your sinks are not working or have very low flow, you may have a frozen water main. If only one area of the house seems to be affected, a localized frozen pipe is likely the culprit.

The best places to look are areas which are exposed to cold air, such as in a crawl space or in your garage. You can try touching the pipes to feel whether they feel extremely cold. If you are able to find a pipe that is frozen, turn off the main water supply. Then. turn on the hot water faucets in the affected sinks. Often just the flow of water will thaw the pipes.

Although some frozen pipes can be thawed with running water or exposing the pipe to heat from a hair dryer or space heater, many will need a professional plumber to unthaw them safely. Heating a frozen pipe too quickly can burst a pipe, causing even more damage to your plumbing and water damage to surrounding property. It is best to let a professional find and fix your frozen pipes, ensuring the issue is resolved completely.

Why Is My Water Bill So High?

In general, property owners of residential properties see their water bills stay relatively consistent for most of the year unless there is a rate hike of they are using more water than normal to irrigate their lawns  or keep their swimming pools full during dry spells in the summer.  In some cases property owners may notice either a gradual or dramatic increase in the their monthly water bill.

When experiencing increased water bills for no apparent reason, the first thing to suspect is a water leak between the water meter and the inside of the house.  The best way to check for this is to make sure that all of the faucets are off, the dishwasher and washing machine are off and there are no running toilets.  Next go to the water meter, which is usually just being the curb and open the lid.  If the meter is running, then you have a leak somewhere between the water meter and the house.  In a vast majority of cases, the homeowner will be responsible for making the necessary repairs on a leaking water supply line between the water meter and the house.

A qualified and experienced plumbing contractor will be able to make the necessary water line repairs quickly and economically saving the homeowner money in the long run by promptly making the necessary repairs and not incurring high monthly water bills.  In many cases, even a slight leak will get worse over time and can ultimately result in a total failure of the water line.  Depending upon their homeowner’s insurance policy, the homeowner may be able to recover the costs of the repair as well!

Refrigerator Water Line Repair

How frustrating, especially in the heat of summer, to have a refrigerator that should be making ice and supplying cold water, but doesn’t. For some unknown reason, repairing the water line to the refrigerator is just one of those nuisance kind of things that we neglect until we no longer remember that the refrigerator is supposed to make ice. Correcting a leak or changing a water line is a simple project that you can do for yourself. You can purchase a new refrigerator water line in plastic, braided steel or copper. You’ll want to measure the distance from your refrigerator to the water line to make sure that you have enough length.

Pull the refrigerator out from the wall and find the water valve shutoff, which should be directly behind or close to the refrigerator. Turn off the water supply to the refrigerator. If you cannot easily locate the water valve, you may have to trace the existing line coming from the refrigerator, as it is possible that when your home was built a refrigerator water line wasn’t in the plan at that time. With the proper sized wrench, disconnect the old water line from the refrigerator and the water source. Connect the new line back to the refrigerator and the water source.

If you have just purchased a new refrigerator with water and ice dispensing features, and your old refrigerator did not have those amenities, you may discover that your home was not plumbed for a refrigerator water line. If this is the case, you will want to call your local plumbing professional to have a water line to your refrigerator installed.
